KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 – As the season of renewal approaches, many households are clearing out the old to make way for the new.
But when it comes to unwanted or expired medications, do you know the proper way to dispose of them?
Improper disposal of pharmaceuticals, such as flushing them down the toilet or tossing them in the trash, poses serious risks to our environment and health.
Malaysia is highly dependent on its water sources, with 99 per cent of the water supply for domestic use deriving from surface water such as streams and rivers.
Alarmingly, World Economic Forum research has shown that the concentration of pharmaceuticals in waterways is reaching dangerous levels, threatening human health and hindering progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal of clean drinking water and sanitation for all by 2030.
In response to this growing concern, the Alpro Foundation, the CSR arm of Alpro Pharmacy — Malaysia’s largest prescription pharmacy chain — launched the Safe Medication Disposal Campaign in 2021.
This pioneering initiative aims to raise awareness and encourage the proper disposal of unwanted and expired medications among Malaysians.
To date, the Alpro Foundation has achieved notable milestones:
Building on its successes, the Alpro Foundation is set to amplify its impact with new initiatives in 2025. A key highlight is the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to embark on a two-year research and community education programme involving members of the public and pharmaceutical companies.
This programme aims to:
In addition, Alpro Foundation plans to construct a “Little Red House” outside its headquarters to serve as a visible landmark for passing audiences, creating awareness about safe medication disposal.
The public can dispose of their medications responsibly at the house, where a QR code will provide further information on safe disposal practices.
“We have observed a significant increase in clinics bringing in unneeded medications, highlighting the urgent need for more education and advocacy,” said Ostwin Paw, CEO of Alpro Foundation.
“By fostering awareness and providing accessible solutions, we are not only protecting our water sources but also paving the way for a healthier and more sustainable future.”
As spring cleaning commences, Alpro Foundation invites Malaysians to join this critical mission. By choosing safe medication disposal practices, you’re taking an active role in safeguarding our environment and ensuring the well-being of future generations.
