Managing Chronic Condition During School

By Alpro Clinic

February 17, 2025

Supporting children with chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, or eczema during school hours is crucial to ensure their well-being without compromising their chance to fully participate in all school activities and improve academic outcome.

Studies noted that students with chronic health conditions miss more school than students who do not have such conditions. This absenteeism, in turn, is associated with lower academic achievement and poor school experience. In order to optimise the child’s experience, there are few strategies that can help to manage and build a conducive school environment.

1. Personalized Health Plan

First of all, it is important to create a personalized health plan tailored to the child’s specific needs. Good partnership between parents, healthcare providers, school staff, and administrators to carefully look into special needs and provide targeted management for these groups of students can improve their academic achievement, and encourage more participation in school activities.

These involved teams also should be familiar with medications usage for each illness, ensure children are compliant to medication at timely manners, learn how to avoid specific triggers and create tailored meal plans for children if needed. In addition, providing training for school staff is also important. Teachers, coaches, and school staff should be trained on how to recognize signs of worsening illness and how to respond effectively.

This may include symptoms of asthma attacks, diabetic hypoglycemia, or eczema flare-ups together with the correct use of medications (such as an inhaler or insulin pump), and when to seek medical attention. Cooperation from parents to report any changes in their child’s condition, medications, or treatment plan to the school is also helpful in order to optimise their condition while at school.

2. Easy Access to Medication

Easy access to medication and equipment also helps to protect the child from possible distress during the day, whether in a classroom, track, or during field trips. When it comes to dealing with asthmatic children, inhalers should be easily accessible and carried by the child or stored in a known safe location such as a teacher’s desk or office.

Same goes to diabetes and eczema, if the child uses an insulin pump or needs glucose tablets during hypoglycemia episodes, and necessary creams or lotions during eczema flare-ups, these essential medications in case of emergencies need to be accessible.

3. Encourage Self-Management Among Children

It is equally important to encourage self-management and children’s coping skills. Students who are able to manage their chronic health conditions tend to have better academic outcomes and school experience. As children grow older, healthcare providers and parents need to teach them to manage their chronic conditions independently.

This includes knowing how to monitor and manage their asthma symptoms, self-monitor blood sugar, and monitor worsening eczema, and learning how to use appropriate medications. Most importantly, children need to know when to seek help or to notify teachers or staff if symptoms are getting out of control.

4. Special Accommodation during Physical Activity

In order to ensure children are able to participate in school activities, school can promote inclusion in physical activities during physical education (PE) class. Children with chronic illnesses can participate in most physical activities with special preparation prior to that. Asthmatic children may need an adjusted intensity of physical activities, with a rescue inhaler as back up in case of an emergency.

Children with diabetes may also need to have their blood sugar checked before, during, and after activity and be given snacks if needed. For children with eczema, teachers can also consider how to avoid strenuous activity that could damage skin and ensure skin-friendly products such as mild soaps and sunscreens are used. Make accommodation for rest, recovery, and hydration when a child participates in sports.

Same goes to field trips and extracurricular activities, teachers need to ensure that medications and emergency plans are in place. If necessary, assign a staff member to supervise the child during activities and take into account any accommodations needed, such as rest breaks or dietary needs.

5. Tailored Mail Plan

When it comes to a balanced diet, it is important to encourage healthy eating habits among children with chronic illness.  For children with diabetes, ensure that meal and snack times are well-planned, and blood sugar levels are monitored.

Work with the school cafeteria to provide suitable food options and avoid triggers. In addition, colleagues and staff should be made aware of the importance of respecting a child’s dietary needs to avoid unintentional discrimination or embarrassment.

6. Mental Health Awareness

Health and emotional management are also part of the responsibility to ensure that children are hindered from mental illness. Children with chronic illnesses may face emotional challenges, such as feeling different from their peers or worrying about their health. It is crucial to foster a school culture of inclusion, where students with chronic conditions are supported by peers and staff.

Other than that, parents and teachers also can consider working together with the school counselor or other support group for children who need help with managing anxiety or stress related to their illness.

Conclusion

Taking everything into consideration, establishing clear and open communication between parents, healthcare providers and school plays a huge role in giving a positive impact to the child’s well-being. By creating a supportive environment, children with chronic illnesses can thrive in academics and participate in school activities.

Consistent communication, individualized care plans, and fostering inclusivity can keep them feel safe and supported, resulting in better health outcomes and a more positive school experience.
