Why Is Keeping a Healthy Weight So Important?

Maintaining a healthy weight is important because it keeps your body strong and helps prevent illnesses. It gives you more energy to do things you enjoy, makes you feel good about yourself, and lets you live a longer and happier life. So, it’s like giving your body a superpower to stay fit and enjoy every moment!!

BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It’s a simple calculation using an individual’s height and weight, it’s commonly used as a quick and easy way to estimate whether someone has a healthy body weight. 

BMI = Weight(kg) / Height(m) x Height(m)

What does your BMI tell you about yourself?

  1. Underweight(<18.5 kg/m2) : You’re on the lighter side
  2. Normal (18.5 – 24.9 kg/m2): Right where you want to be, no worries.
  3. Overweight (25 – 29.9 kg/m2): A bit more serious, consider some healthy habits.
  4. Obesity (>30 kg/m2) : It’s a sign to pay attention and take steps toward wellness.

TIPS#1 Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues.

  • Hunger cues are like your body’s way of saying, “Hey, it’s time to eat!” You might feel your stomach growling or notice a bit of emptiness.
  • Fullness cues, on the other hand, are signals that say, “Okay, that’s enough.” You might feel satisfied or not as hungry anymore.

 Listening to these cues helps you eat when you need to and stop when you have plenty, keeping things in balance.

TIPS#2 Limit Processed Foods and Sugars:

  • Whole Food Wins: Pick food that looks like they did when they were grown. Think apples instead of apple-flavored snacks.
  • Water, Not Soda: Swap sugary drinks for the ultimate hydrator – water. 
  • Colour Your Plate: Load up on different colour fruits and veggies. 
  • Fruitful Sweets: When your sweet tooth calls, answer with fruits. They’re nature’s candy, 2 servings of fruits in a day is enough
  • Read labels like a secret agent: If there are too many long words, it’s probably best to put it back on the shelf, for example, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS),trans fats, artificial colors and flavors etc.

TIPS#3 Practice Mindful Eating:

Eating mindfully is just enjoying your food without rushing. 

  • Snail Bites: Chew slowly, like a snail enjoying a tasty treat.
  • Taste Detective: Pay attention to the flavors in your mouth
  • Quiet Time: Eat without distractions, no TV or phones. Just you and your meal.
  • Look at Your Food: Notice the colors on your plate. It’s like a food rainbow!
  • Thank You Bite: Before you eat, say a little thanks to your food. Gratitude makes meals better.
