Washing your hands is critical to slow the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). However, frequent handwashing can cause dry skin that can flake, itch, crack and even bleed without proper precautions.
By adhering to safety measures and standard operating procedures (SOPs), alcohol-based hand sanitisers are available in school. While these safety measures can reduce parents’ fearful and anxious for their children’s safety, another problem arises.
Some children are sensitive to alcohol-based hand sanitisers. They are experiencing dry, itchy hands. When itching is unbearable, they scratched and caused their skin became sore and red, then develop small blisters or painful cracks.
Pharmacist Yong Xiu Yun advices public to sanitize our frequent used items, such as door knobs, tables and handphones. Next, always wash hands with lukewarm water, avoid hot water that could further dry up the skin.
“Keeping skin moisturised is important,” said Ph Xiu Yun. Apply an easily absorbed moisturizer after hand washing or whenever needed. To reduce the risk of dry, cracked skin from hand washing and alcohol sanitiser, it’s recommended to use alcohol free disinfectant, which is equally effective to kill 99.9% germs.
Cracked and bleeding hands are also more susceptible to infections. Thus, it’s extremely important to get a solution to prevent chapped and broken skin.
There are many moisturizers in the market that help lock in hydration and keep the skin feeling soft and smooth. For intense skin repair, a moisturizer with vegetable oils are recommended because of smaller molecular size in vegetable oils and more easily absorbed into the skin than mineral oils.
The Original Vegesorb CE Med+ Moisturiser contains natural almond and apricot kernel oil, enhanced with Vitamin E oil and capric triglycerides derived from coconut oil.
Capric triglyceride creates a barrier on the skin’s surface, which helps to reduce skin dryness by decreasing the loss of moisture. Its oily texture makes this vegesorb easy to apply and leaves a non-greasy after-touch.
For people with sensitive skin, a good alternative is alcohol free disinfectant, which is gentle to skin, no skin irritation and suitable for whole family, even safe for baby.
Silver dihydrogen citrate (SDC) disinfectant is a patented blend of silver ions and citric acid that is effectively kill 99.9% bacteria, fungi and viruses. It is an antimicrobial product recognised by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in its effectiveness against coronavirus. *Note: Do not spray on injured wound.
