In the spirit of International Women’s Day, a time we dedicate to lifting each other and reflecting on our shared and individual journeys, I find myself pondering the concept of work-life balance. As a pharmacist, my path has been filled with its own unique set of challenges and triumphs, a journey not just about career progression but about finding joy and fulfilment in what I do.
Please note the reflections shared here are deeply personal, drawn from my experiences in the realm of healthcare.
The Essence of Success and Balance
The idea of work-life balance often evokes images of an ideally segmented pie chart, where professional and personal lives don’t overlap. Yet, when I look back over the last decade—from a diligent pharmacy student to a dedicated provisionally registered pharmacist and now, a Professional Care and Development Manager at Alpro Pharmacy—I see a different picture. My ‘success’ isn’t just a title or a role; it’s the happiness I find in my work and the sense that I’m contributing something meaningful.
Crafting a Personal Action Plan
There was a time when I needed to figure out if I was on the right track or if I could really balance everything. I looked for guidance from mentors and others who’ve been there. One night, while searching online, I found a helpful idea called the four-way view. It made me see how connected all parts of my life are—work, home, community, and myself. This realisation helped me see that being dedicated to my career also brings value to my personal life, adding depth and joy I hadn’t fully recognised.
While I’ve made strides in using this framework to enhance my work-life balance, I’m far from being an expert. This is a journey of continuous learning and adaptation, and I warmly invite you to embark on this path with me.
To navigate this framework, I first identified my core domains: career, family, community, and personal growth. I allocated percentages to each, reflecting their importance, and then analysed how my time and energy distribution matched these values.
This exercise made me introspect deeply, considering how much I invested in each area and how satisfied and effective I felt in them.
The reflective questions were pivotal:
What impact do my current choices have on each domain?
Are there discrepancies between what’s important to me and where I focus my energy?
What changes are necessary to improve my satisfaction and effectiveness?
These questions guided me to uncover imbalances and craft a more aligned action plan, refining my approach to achieving personal and professional harmony.
Looking Forward with Intention
As I consider the future and potentially starting a family, I realise the importance of planning and dialogue. Like many women, I’ve pondered how personal milestones intersect my career. Yet, I’ve found comfort and clarity in planning and open conversations, recognising that harmonising different aspects of life is possible.
As part of the Alpro team, I’ve had the unique opportunity to witness firsthand the impact of our Alpro Birth Control (ABC) Teleconsultation service. This initiative, staffed by a skilled team of healthcare professionals, is designed to guide individuals through their birth control options, providing informative and empathetic support. We aim to empower people with the knowledge to make choices that best suit their life plans and health needs.
Conclusion
My journey to finding work-life harmony is ongoing, marked by learning, adapting, and embracing change. I share this journey with you, hoping to inspire reflection on your own path. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, do remember the power of our choices, the strength in our support for one another, and the importance of living a life that’s true to who we are.
