Have you ever experienced a migraine pain? A migraine is a common episodic disorder. It is a type of intense headache that causes severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually in one section of your head. It’s often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, difficulty speaking and numbness, and makes you extremely sensitive to light and sound. Migraine attacks can last for hours to days, and the pain can be so severe that it interferes with your daily activities.
Migraines may not develop until early adulthood, but they can begin in childhood as well. Women are more likely than men to get migraines, and if they run in your family, you’re more likely to suffer from them too.
A migraine often begins in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood. It usually occurs in stages and can last for several days. It can affect a person’s daily life, including their ability to work or study. There are different stages of a migraine, and numerous symptoms can alert you that you’re about to have one. It can progress through four stages: prodrome, aura, attack and post-drome. However, please take note that not everyone who has migraines goes through all stages.
Migraine symptoms can occur one to two days before the migraine itself and these symptoms include food cravings, depression, fatigue, hyperactivity, frequent yawning, irritability and increased thirst and urination.
After this, you may start experiencing problems with vision, speech, movement and/or sensation. You may have difficulty speaking clearly, feel a tingling sensation in your face, arms or legs, see shapes or bright spots, or temporarily lose your vision. Auras are reversible symptoms of the nervous system. They’re usually visual, but can also include other disturbances. Each symptom usually begins gradually, builds up over several minutes and lasts for 20 to 60 minutes.
The next stage is when you’ll actually start feeling the pain of the migraine. You may notice symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, vomiting, dizziness or feeling faint, and pulsing or throbbing head pain in one area of your head.
After a migraine attack, you might feel drained, confused and washed out for up to a day. Some people report feeling elated. Sudden head movement might bring on the pain again briefly.
Migraine pain can be triggered by a number of factors, however the exact cause of migraines is not yet known. Genetics may make you more sensitive to triggers that lead to migraines, which we discuss below.
During menstruation, women can experience migraine pain due to the hormonal changes happening in our bodies. Migraines can also be triggered by emotional factors like stress, anxiety, depression, excitement and shock. Physical triggers can also lead to migraines. These include lack of sleep, poor posture, shoulder and neck tension and physical overexertion.
Caffeine and alcohol can also contribute to migraine pain, as can certain foods, including chocolate, cheese and citrus fruits. Irregular meal times and dehydration definitely don’t help, either. Sleeping pills, contraceptive pills and other medications have been found to cause migraines, and then there are environmental triggers like strong smells, stuffy rooms, second-hand smoke, flickering screens, bright lights and loud noises.
