If you like jogging or marathon, then this is the topic for you. Today, let’s take a look at how running affects our knee and what are the signs of Runner’s Knee?
According to statistics published by the Harvard University Journal, the proportion of injuries caused by running every year is as high as 75%, especially Runner’s Knee. Every time you land a step while running, the knees have to face the impact of 3-5 times your body weight, which eventually cause the knee caps, ligaments, joints and tendons to wear out very fast. The situation is worsened if your leg muscles are not strong enough to support the high intensity repetitive motions.
As a result, you may develop early signs of Runner’s Knees as below:
Once the knee and surrounding parts are injured, recovery is often difficult where surgery may be needed most of the time in severe conditions. Because of this, many runners are forced to stop exercising due to the irreversible damage done to their knee. Now, does that mean you should stop jogging or running?
In fact, your knees are more prone to injury if you stop exercising completely because human bones and muscles need to be trained and stimulated regularly in order to promote metabolism, accelerate blood circulation, remove waste substances and improve recovery with the aim to reduce chronic inflammations in the knee and surrounding tissues.
Hence, the key is to wear a protective garment during jogging or marathon to prevent wear and tear of your knee and surrounding parts, where knee guard or knee brace would be recommended by most physiotherapists.
Question is, there are so many different knee guards on the market, which one of them are specially designed for running purpose? Well, you may consider Ugoku Dynamic Taping Knee Guard, a 7-features gear that is tested and recommended by Malaysia National Marathoner Muhaizar Mohamad, who won a Bronze Medal at 2019 SEA GAMES.
